Part (a): Behaviour therapy uses conditioning to change maladaptive learned behaviour — systematic desensitisation, aversive conditioning, positive reinforcement/token economy, negative reinforcement, modelling.

Part (b): Ellis's RET disputes irrational beliefs via the A-B-C model; Beck's cognitive therapy corrects negative core schemas, automatic thoughts and cognitive distortions.

Part (a)

Behaviour therapy is based on the assumption that psychological distress arises from faulty learning of behaviours and thought patterns; a range of techniques is used to reduce the client's arousal and to alter behaviour through classical conditioning, operant conditioning and vicarious (observational) learning.

Various techniques:

  1. Systematic desensitisation — introduced by Wolpe on the principle of reciprocal inhibition; the client is trained in relaxation and then gradually exposed to an anxiety hierarchy (least to most feared), so that relaxation replaces anxiety. Widely used for phobias.
  2. Aversive conditioning — an undesirable behaviour (e.g. alcohol use) is repeatedly paired with an aversive/unpleasant stimulus (e.g. a mild electric shock or a nausea-inducing agent) so that the behaviour is suppressed.
  3. Positive reinforcement / Token economy — desirable behaviour is followed by a reward; in a token economy, tokens are given for adaptive behaviour and later exchanged for privileges (used in institutional settings).
  4. Negative reinforcement — an aversive stimulus is removed when the desired response occurs, strengthening that response. …
