  1. The mentally ill are rehabilitated through occupational therapy, social skills training, cognitive retraining and finally vocational training so they become self-sufficient.
  2. Behaviour therapy eliminates faulty behaviour using aversive conditioning, negative/positive reinforcement, token economy, differential reinforcement, systematic desensitisation and modelling.

Part (a)

Many patients of mental disorders suffer from negative symptoms such as disinterest, apathy and a lack of motivation to work or interact with people. Rehabilitation is required to help such patients become self-sufficient; its aim is to empower the patient to become a productive member of society to the extent possible. The process, carried out in a graded manner, includes:

  1. Occupational therapy – patients are taught skills such as candle-making, paper-bag making and weaving so that they form a work discipline and a routine.
  2. Social skills training – patients are helped to develop interpersonal skills through role-play, imitation and instruction, so they can relate to others and function socially.
  3. Cognitive retraining – exercises are given to improve the basic cognitive functions of attention, memory and executive functioning that the illness may have impaired. …
