Risk factors associated with suicide: Suicidal behaviour is the result of a complex interface of biological, genetic, psychological, sociological, cultural and environmental factors acting together. Among the important risk factors are mental disorders – particularly depression and alcohol-use disorders – as well as going through natural disasters, experiencing violence, abuse or loss, and experiencing isolation at any stage of life. A previous suicide attempt is one of the strongest predictors of a future attempt.
Symptoms that help identify students in distress: Any unexpected or striking change affecting the adolescent's performance, attendance or behaviour should be taken seriously. Warning signs include a loss of interest in activities the student usually enjoys, declining grades, decreasing effort, misbehaviour in the classroom, mysterious or repeated absences, and smoking, drinking or drug misuse. …
