Technological approach to intelligence: In technologically advanced societies, child-rearing practices foster skills of generalisation and abstraction, speed, minimal moves and mental manipulation among children. Intelligence is understood as personal achievement founded on reasoning, judgement and the efficient handling of information.
Integral approach to intelligence: Intelligence in the Indian tradition can be termed integral intelligence. Indian thinkers view intelligence holistically, giving equal attention to cognitive and non-cognitive processes and their integration, and emphasising connectivity with the social and world environment. Its four facets are cognitive competence, social competence, emotional competence and entrepreneurial competence.
Comparison: the technological approach is analytic, individual-centred and achievement-oriented, while the integral approach is holistic, relational and value-oriented. The former isolates cognition; the latter integrates cognition with social and emotional life. …
