Q.Gopal, Heera and Iqbal were partners in a firm sharing profits and losses equally. Iqbal died on 1st April, 2022. Final dues payable to Iqbal's executor as on the date of death amounted to ₹ 4,00,000. Starting from 31st March, 2023, the executor was to be paid in two equal annual instalments of ₹ 2,00,000 each, with interest @ 10% per annum. Accounts are closed on 31st March every year. Iqbal's Executor's Account settles ₹4,00,000 in two annual principal instalments of ₹2,00,000 with interest at 10% p.a. on the outstanding balance: payments of ₹2,40,000 (31 Mar 2023) and ₹2,20,000 (31 Mar 2024), after which the account closes at nil.

On death, the amount due to the executor (₹4,00,000) becomes a liability of the firm. The principal is paid in two equal instalments of ₹2,00,000 starting 31 March 2023, with interest at 10% p.a. on the balance outstanding at the start of each year.

Working Notes — Interest

Year ended 31 March 2023: interest on ₹4,00,000 =4,00,000×10%=40,000= 4{,}00{,}000 \times 10\% = 40{,}000.

Year ended 31 March 2024: balance after first instalment =4,00,000−2,00,000=2,00,000= 4{,}00{,}000 - 2{,}00{,}000 = 2{,}00{,}000; interest =2,00,000×10%=20,000= 2{,}00{,}000 \times 10\% = 20{,}000.
