The Workmen's Compensation Fund (Rs 1,00,000) is applied against the estimated claim. Case (i): a Rs 1,20,000 claim leaves a Rs 20,000 deficiency debited to partners in 9:7:4. Case (ii): an Rs 80,000 claim leaves a Rs 20,000 surplus credited to partners in 9:7:4. Case (iii): a Rs 1,00,000 claim exactly absorbs the fund, so nothing reaches the partners.

Concept

The Workmen's Compensation Fund is a reserve built out of profits to meet a possible future compensation liability. On a partner's retirement it is reallocated according to the actual estimated claim:

  • Claim > Fund -> the shortfall is a loss, debited to all partners' capital accounts in the old ratio.
  • Claim < Fund -> the excess is a gain, credited to all partners in the old ratio.
  • Claim = Fund -> the fund is fully absorbed by the claim; nothing is credited or debited to the partners.

In every case the estimated claim is recorded as a liability (Workmen's Compensation Claim A/c). Old ratio = Nandini : Shweta : Hiren = 9 : 7 : 4 (total 20).
