Aunt Jennifer's aim is to be free and fearless, but she fails because she remains trapped and dominated by her marriage all her life and even in death - only her art, the tigers, achieves the freedom she craved.

Through the tigers she embroiders, Aunt Jennifer expresses her deepest wish: to be strong, confident and free, like the proud, unafraid animals prancing across her screen. That is her real aim - liberation from the fear that rules her.

Yet the poem makes clear that she never achieves it. In her own life she stays timid and burdened; the heavy wedding band and the ordeals of her marriage weigh her down, and her hands flutter with fear even as she sews. The final stanza confirms her defeat: when she dies, her terrified hands will still be ringed with the ordeals she was mastered by. Even death brings no release. …
