At the Golden Lion Hotel the Governor found and arrested Evans, thinking he had beaten him — but the arrest was a trap Evans himself had set, and he escaped again soon after.

After Evans slips out of Oxford Prison during his German O-Level exam, the Governor pieces together the clues left in the cell — the question paper and the correction slip handed out during the exam. Working through them, he realises they point to a hotel: the Golden Lion. Confident that he has finally outwitted the cunning prisoner, he sets off to catch him there.

At the Golden Lion the Governor's deduction seems to pay off. He is directed to a room and there finds Evans, calm and unresisting. The Governor confronts him, arrests him, and has him bundled into a waiting prison van to be taken back to Oxford. For a moment it looks as though the elaborate escape has failed and the Governor has won. …
