The peddler felt he had fallen into a trap when, after stealing thirty kronor and fleeing into a dark forest, he lost his way completely — and realised the world had baited and caught him just like the rats in the traps he sold.

The peddler who wandered about selling rattraps had long amused himself with a bitter idea: the whole world, he thought, is nothing but a giant rattrap. It sets out baits — riches, food, shelter, comforts — and the moment a person reaches for them, the trap snaps shut and holds him fast.

His own turn came soon after he was given shelter by a friendly old crofter, who trusted him, fed him, and even showed him the thirty kronor he had earned. Tempted by this 'bait', the peddler stole the money the next morning. To avoid being caught on the public highway, he turned off into a large forest. …
