The invention of cheap synthetic indigo caused the price of natural indigo to collapse, making its cultivation unprofitable and destroying the indigo-plantation system in India.

Natural indigo had for a long time been a highly valued dye in the European textile industry, and Indian indigo — especially from Bengal and Bihar — dominated the world market. Prices stayed high because demand was steady, supply was concentrated in a few regions, and there was no real substitute for indigo's deep, lasting blue. It was this profitability that led planters to force Indian peasants to grow indigo under oppressive arrangements like the tinkathia system.

The situation changed completely when synthetic indigo was developed in Germany in the late nineteenth century. The artificial dye was chemically similar to the natural one but could be manufactured in factories, in any quantity, all year round, without depending on land, weather or peasant labour — and, above all, it was cheaper.

The effect on natural indigo prices was swift and severe:

  • Prices crashed. As synthetic indigo flooded the market, buyers had no reason to pay a premium for the natural dye, so its price fell sharply.
  • The market was lost. Within a short time synthetic indigo had captured most of the world's dye trade, and natural indigo became commercially unviable. …
