Douglas imitated ('aped') the other boys at the pool because that was how he tried to teach himself to swim — copying their movements to master the strokes and get used to the water.

In Deep Water, Douglas is determined to learn to swim despite his deep unease around water. Having no proper instructor at this early stage, he does what a nervous beginner naturally does: he watches the other boys in the Y.M.C.A. pool and copies them.

By aping them, he hoped to pick up the basic actions of swimming — paddling, moving his arms and legs, staying afloat — simply through observation and imitation.
