(a) 2Ca(OH)2+2Cl2→Ca(OCl)2+CaCl2+2H2O2Ca(OH)_2+2Cl_2\to Ca(OCl)_2+CaCl_2+2H_2O; 2Fe3++SO2+2H2O→2Fe2++SO42−+4H+2Fe^{3+}+SO_2+2H_2O\to2Fe^{2+}+SO_4^{2-}+4H^+.

(b) Phosgene (COCl2COCl_2) and mustard gas from Cl2Cl_2; Cu2++4NH3→[Cu(NH3)4]2+Cu^{2+}+4NH_3\to[Cu(NH_3)_4]^{2+} (deep blue, d–d transition).

Equations

(a) Cl2Cl_2 through slaked lime

Chlorine disproportionates with cold slaked lime to give bleaching powder (a mixed salt of hypochlorite and chloride):

2Ca(OH)2+2Cl2→Ca(OCl)2+CaCl2+2H2O2Ca(OH)_2 + 2Cl_2 \rightarrow Ca(OCl)_2 + CaCl_2 + 2H_2O

Cl goes from 0 to −1 (chloride) and +1 (hypochlorite); the active bleaching species is OCl−OCl^-.

(b) SO2SO_2 through aqueous Fe(III) salt

SO2SO_2 is a reducing agent; in water it reduces Fe3+^{3+} to Fe2+^{2+}, itself being oxidised to sulphate:

2Fe3++SO2+2H2O→2Fe2++SO42−+4H+2Fe^{3+} + SO_2 + 2H_2O \rightarrow 2Fe^{2+} + SO_4^{2-} + 4H^+

The colour changes from yellow (Fe3+^{3+}) to pale green (Fe2+^{2+}).
