Diminishing marginal utility, income effect, substitution effect, new buyers and multiple uses make demand rise as price falls.

The law of demand (inverse relation of price and quantity demanded) operates for the following reasons (any six):

  1. Law of diminishing marginal utility — As a consumer has more units of a good, their marginal utility falls, so he will buy more only at a lower price.
  2. Income effect — A fall in price raises the real income (purchasing power) of the consumer, enabling him to buy more of the good.
  3. Substitution effect — When a good becomes cheaper relative to its substitutes, consumers switch to it from the now dearer substitutes, raising its demand.
  4. Arrival of new consumers — At a lower price, poorer consumers who could not afford the good earlier can now buy it, increasing total demand. …
