Law of demand: price and quantity demanded are inversely related, ceteris paribus — shown by a downward-sloping demand curve.

Statement — The law of demand states that, other things remaining the same (ceteris paribus), the quantity demanded of a commodity increases when its price falls and decreases when its price rises. There is thus an inverse relationship between price and quantity demanded.

Assumptions ('other things being equal') — income, tastes and preferences, prices of related goods, and expectations about future prices all remain unchanged.

Demand schedule (illustrative):

Price (₹) | Quantity demanded (units)

5 | 10

4 | 20

3 | 30

2 | 40

As price falls from ₹5 to ₹2, quantity demanded rises from 10 to 40 units.
