A polaroid is a man-made polarising sheet that filters unpolarised light into plane-polarised light by absorbing all vibrations except those along one preferred axis.

Ordinary light (e.g. from the sun or a bulb) is unpolarised — its electric field vector vibrates randomly in all directions perpendicular to the direction of propagation. A polaroid is a thin commercial sheet made of long-chain polymeric molecules (such as polyvinyl alcohol) aligned in one direction and treated with iodine, which selectively absorbs the component of the electric field parallel to the chains while freely transmitting the component perpendicular to it. The result is plane-polarised light, vibrating only along the polaroid's transmission axis.

Two uses of polaroids:

  1. In sunglasses and window/car-windshield anti-glare filters, to cut down the glare of reflected/scattered unpolarised light, since reflected light is partially polarised and can be selectively blocked. …
