Polarization restricts the oscillations of light's electric field to one plane; it proves light is transverse, not longitudinal.

Ordinary (unpolarised) light from sources like the sun or a bulb consists of electric-field vibrations in all directions perpendicular to the direction of propagation.

Polarization is the phenomenon in which the vibrations of the electric field vector of a light wave are restricted to just one direction (plane) perpendicular to the direction of propagation. Light with this property is called plane-polarised (linearly polarised) light.

  • Polarization can be produced by reflection, refraction, scattering, selective absorption (a Polaroid), or double refraction.
  • Malus's Law gives the intensity after a second polariser (analyser) at angle θ\theta to the first: I=I0cos⁡2θI = I_0\cos^2\theta. …
