Q."Salesmanship is both an art and a science." Discuss the nature of salesmanship.
The nature of salesmanship can be examined under three heads.
1. Salesmanship as an art. An art is the skilful, practised application of knowledge to achieve a result. Salesmanship is an art because success depends on how the salesman applies his knowledge — his tact, his choice of words, his ability to read a customer's mood and adapt. Two salesmen with identical product knowledge can achieve very different results; that difference is the art of selling. Like any artist, a good salesman is partly born with aptitude and largely made through practice.
2. Salesmanship as a science. A science is an organised body of knowledge based on tested principles that can be studied and applied systematically. Salesmanship qualifies because it rests on principles drawn from psychology (buyer behaviour and the mental stages a buyer passes through), economics (needs, wants and demand) and management. These principles can be learned and taught — which is exactly why salesmanship can be studied as a subject.
3. Salesmanship as a profession. A profession has a specialised body of knowledge, formal training, a code of ethics and a spirit of service. Modern salesmanship is steadily acquiring these marks — there is organised knowledge, formal sales training, and a growing emphasis on honesty and customer service — though it is not yet as fully regulated as law or medicine.
Conclusion. Salesmanship is best described as an art founded on a science, and increasingly practised as a profession. The scientific principles supply the knowledge of why and how people buy; the art supplies the skill to apply that knowledge to an unpredictable customer; and the professional spirit supplies the ethics that make selling respectable and lasting.
Salesmanship is simultaneously an art (personal skill and tact), a science (principles from psychology, economics and management) and a developing profession (specialised knowledge, training and ethics of service). It is essentially an art founded on a science.
