1. Manufacturer's salesmen. Employed by the producer to sell its goods to wholesalers, retailers or industrial users. Two sub-types:
- Pioneer / creative salesmen — introduce new products and create fresh demand, facing resistance and needing great persuasive skill.
- Dealer-servicing salesmen — call regularly on existing dealers to take repeat orders, help with displays and maintain the relationship.
2. Wholesaler's salesmen. Employed by wholesalers to sell a wide range of goods to retailers; they book repeat orders, extend credit and advise retailers.
3. Retailer's salesmen. Employed by retail shops to deal with the final consumer. Two sub-types:
- Counter (indoor) salesmen — serve customers who come into the shop; courtesy and quick service are key.
- Travelling / outdoor salesmen — go out to the customer (door-to-door); initiative and persuasion matter most.
