A dicot leaf is characterised by a branching, net-like reticulate venation, while a monocot leaf shows veins running parallel to one another along the blade.

Since venation is the arrangement of veins and veinlets within the lamina, the two leaf types can be represented schematically by focusing on how their veins are laid out.

  • A dicot leaf diagram would show a prominent central midrib from which smaller veins branch out repeatedly, these smaller veins and veinlets rejoining one another to form an irregular meshwork spread across the whole blade — the reticulate pattern typical of dicotyledons.
  • A monocot leaf diagram would instead show several veins of roughly similar size running side by side, extending more or less along the length (or breadth) of the leaf without branching into a network — the parallel pattern characteristic of most monocotyledons. …
