Metastasis is the spread of cancer cells from the primary tumour to distant parts of the body.

Cancer cells lose contact inhibition and divide uncontrollably, forming a primary tumour. Some tumour cells acquire the ability to invade the surrounding normal tissue, enter the blood or lymph, and travel to a distant site where they establish a new (secondary) tumour.
