Cancer diagnosis uses tissue, imaging and molecular tests; treatment combines surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

Detection of cancer:

  1. Biopsy and histopathological studies of the suspected tissue — a small piece of tissue is surgically removed and examined microscopically for abnormal/cancerous cells.
  2. Blood and bone marrow tests — for cancers like leukaemia, an abnormally elevated count of certain blood cells can indicate cancer.
  3. Radiography (X-rays) — helps detect cancers of internal organs, such as lung cancer.
  4. CT scan (Computed Tomography) — uses X-rays to build a three-dimensional image of internal organs, useful for detecting tumours in different tissues.
  5. MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) — uses magnetic fields to produce detailed, cross-sectional images that can reveal abnormal tissue growths.
  6. Molecular biology techniques — used to detect cancer-related genes (proto-oncogenes/oncogenes/tumour suppressor genes) in patients, e.g. using monoclonal antibodies against tumour-specific antigens, and PCR-based techniques for early detection.

Treatment of cancer:

  1. Surgery — physical removal of the cancerous tissue/tumour mass.
  2. Radiotherapy — the tumour is exposed to lethal doses of radiation while shielding surrounding normal tissue, to kill cancerous cells. …
