P(A∪B)=P(A)+P(B)−P(A∩B)P(A\cup B)=P(A)+P(B)-P(A\cap B); if mutually exclusive, P(A∪B)=P(A)+P(B)P(A\cup B)=P(A)+P(B).

Law of addition of probability (general): For any two events AA and BB,

P(A∪B)=P(A)+P(B)−P(A∩B).P(A\cup B)=P(A)+P(B)-P(A\cap B).

We subtract P(A∩B)P(A\cap B) because the outcomes common to AA and BB are counted twice in P(A)+P(B)P(A)+P(B).
