A random variable XX = number of successes follows a Binomial distribution B(n,p)B(n,p) only if all four of the following conditions hold for the underlying random experiment:

  1. Fixed number of trials (nn). The experiment consists of a predetermined, fixed number of trials decided before the experiment is performed — e.g. tossing a coin exactly 10 times, not tossing until a head appears.
  2. Independent trials. The outcome of any one trial must not affect, or be affected by, the outcome of any other trial — e.g. drawing items with replacement (or from a very large batch) keeps pp unaffected trial to trial; drawing without replacement from a small batch would violate this.
  3. Only two possible outcomes per trial. Each trial must result in exactly one of two mutually exclusive outcomes, conventionally called ‘success’ and ‘failure’ — e.g. head/tail, defective/non-defective, pass/fail.
  4. Constant probability of success (pp). The probability of success pp (and hence failure q=1−pq=1-p) must remain the same on every trial. …
