A population's growth (increase in numbers over time) is driven by births, deaths, immigration and emigration, and typically follows either an unrestricted exponential (J-shaped) curve or, more realistically, a resource-limited logistic (S-shaped) curve.

Population density is not static; it changes based on four basic processes: Natality (B, births), Mortality (D, deaths), Immigration (I, individuals entering the habitat) and Emigration (E, individuals leaving the habitat), summarised as N(t+1) = N(t) + [(B + I) - (D + E)].

Two classical models describe population growth:

Exponential growth (J-shaped curve): occurs when resources (food, space) are unlimited, so each species realises its full biological potential to grow; described by dN/dt = rN, where r is the intrinsic rate of natural increase.
