A population's density changes with time as a net result of four processes — births, deaths, immigration and emigration.

Population density (the number of individuals of a species per unit area/volume) is not static; it changes continuously depending on food availability, predators, climatic factors and other conditions. Four basic processes determine whether a population grows, shrinks, or stays stable:
