Direct bromination of aniline over-brominates it (to the 2,4,6-tribromo product) because -NH2 is a powerful ring activator, so -NH2 must first be 'tamed' by acetylation before a clean monobromination can be done.

Aniline's -NH2 group is a very strong ortho/para-directing activator, making the ring so reactive that direct treatment with Br2 gives 2,4,6-tribromoaniline (multiple substitution) rather than the desired single para-bromo product. To control this, the amino group is first protected/moderated by acetylation.

Step 1 - Protect the amino group (acetylation):

C6H5NH2 + (CH3CO)2O --> C6H5NHCOCH3 (Acetanilide) + CH3COOH

(The bulkier, less strongly activating -NHCOCH3 group moderates the ring's reactivity and, due to its size, favours para substitution.)

Step 2 - Monobromination (para-selective): …
