Vernalisation is the process of inducing/hastening flowering in a plant by treating it with a period of low temperature.

Certain plants, especially biennials and winter cereals (e.g., wheat, rye), require a period of exposure to low temperature (cold treatment) before they will flower — this is a natural adaptation ensuring that flowering happens in spring/summer after passing through a cold winter. Vernalisation refers to the artificial induction of this flowering response by deliberately exposing seeds (in the process of imbibition) or young seedlings to a controlled period of low temperature, which allows the plant to bypass its natural need for a full cold winter and can be used to grow winter varieties in spring, shortening the vegetative phase and hastening flowering. The site of perception of the cold stimulus is generally the shoot apical meristem/embryo, and the effect can, in some cases, be reversed by exposure to high temperature shortly after cold treatm …
