Vernalization is the process of inducing/accelerating flowering in a plant by giving it a period of low-temperature (chilling) treatment.

Many plants, especially winter annual/biennial crops such as wheat and some varieties of biennials, require a period of exposure to low temperature during a particular growth stage (often the seedling stage) before they can flower normally at a subsequent higher temperature and appropriate photoperiod.
