Vernalisation is the low-temperature (cold) induction of flowering; its significance is that it shortens the vegetative phase, hastens flowering and enables winter/biennial crops like wheat to flower and yield in one favourable season.

What it is: Vernalisation is defined as the qualitative or quantitative dependence of flowering on exposure to a period of low temperature. In several plants - especially winter varieties of wheat, barley and rye, and biennials such as cabbage, sugar beet and carrot - flowering is either accelerated or made possible only after the plant or its germinating seed experiences a spell of cold.
