Escape velocity is ve=2GM/Rv_e=\sqrt{2GM/R}, found from the energy needed to just escape Earth's gravity to infinity.

Derivation. Escape velocity is the minimum speed a body must be given at the Earth's surface so that it can just escape Earth's gravitational pull and reach infinity with (at least) zero residual velocity.

Energy method. Total mechanical energy at the surface (radius R) with escape speed vev_e:

Ei=12mve2+(−GMmR)E_i = \frac12 m v_e^2 + \left(-\frac{GMm}{R}\right)

At infinity, for the body to "just" escape, both KE and PE become zero:

Ef=0E_f = 0

By conservation of energy, Ei=EfE_i = E_f: …
