A body launched with exactly enough kinetic energy to cancel out its (negative) gravitational potential energy will just barely reach infinity with zero speed left over — that threshold speed is the escape velocity.

Definition: Escape velocity (vev_e) is the minimum velocity with which a body must be projected from the surface of a planet so that it completely overcomes the planet's gravitational pull and never falls back (i.e. it reaches an infinite distance with zero residual velocity).

Derivation: Consider a body of mass mm projected from the surface of a planet of mass MM and radius RR, with velocity vev_e.

Initial kinetic energy: KE=(1/2)mve2KE = (1/2)mv_e^2

Initial gravitational potential energy (taking PE at infinity as zero): PE=−GMm/RPE = -GMm/R

Total initial energy: Ei=(1/2)mve2−GMm/RE_i = (1/2)mv_e^2 - GMm/R
