Setting the kinetic energy of projection equal to the magnitude of the gravitational potential energy at the surface (energy conservation) gives the escape velocity formula ve=2GM/Rv_e = \sqrt{2GM/R}.

Escape velocity is the minimum speed with which a body must be projected from the Earth's surface so that it just escapes the Earth's gravitational field, reaching infinity with (at minimum) zero residual kinetic energy.

Consider a body of mass mm projected from the Earth's surface (mass MM, radius RR) with velocity vev_e. Using the law of conservation of energy between the surface and infinity:

At the surface:

KEi=12mve2,PEi=−GMmRKE_i = \frac{1}{2}mv_e^2, \quad PE_i = -\frac{GMm}{R}

At infinity (just escaping, with zero residual velocity):

KEf=0,PEf=0KE_f = 0, \quad PE_f = 0

By conservation of total mechanical energy: …
