Postulates of the Kinetic Theory of Gases:

  1. A gas consists of a very large number of identical molecules, which are perfectly elastic, rigid spheres.
  2. The size of a molecule is negligibly small compared to the average distance between molecules (molecules are treated as point masses).
  3. Molecules are in a state of continuous, random motion, moving with all possible velocities in all directions.
  4. Molecules exert no force on one another except during a collision (no intermolecular attraction or repulsion between collisions).
  5. Collisions between molecules, and between molecules and the container walls, are perfectly elastic — total kinetic energy is conserved.
