A cardiac cycle is the sequence of events — joint diastole, atrial systole, ventricular systole, and ventricular diastole — that make up one complete heartbeat, lasting about 0.8 seconds.

The cardiac cycle consists of alternating contraction (systole) and relaxation (diastole) of the heart's chambers, repeated roughly 72 times per minute:

  1. Joint diastole: Both atria and both ventricles are relaxed at the same time. Blood returning from the veins flows passively into the atria and, through the open AV valves, into the ventricles, partially filling them.

  2. Atrial systole: The SA node ('pacemaker') generates an impulse that spreads through the atria, causing them to contract. This pushes the remaining blood in the atria into the ventricles, completing ventricular filling.
