Structure (brief): The human heart is a four-chambered muscular organ - two upper atria and two lower ventricles. The right side handles deoxygenated blood, the left side oxygenated blood; the two are kept separate so there is no mixing (double circulation).
Conducting (pacemaker) system:
- The Sino-Atrial (SA) node in the wall of the right atrium is the natural pacemaker; it initiates the heartbeat.
- The impulse spreads to the Atrio-Ventricular (AV) node, then along the bundle of His, which divides into branches ending in the Purkinje fibres that spread through the ventricular walls. Because the impulse arises within the heart's own muscle, the heartbeat is called myogenic.
Working - the cardiac cycle (one heartbeat, ~0.8 s):
- Joint diastole: All four chambers are relaxed; oxygenated blood from the lungs enters the left atrium and deoxygenated blood from the body enters the right atrium; blood begins to flow into the ventricles.
- Atrial systole: The SA node fires; both atria contract and push the remaining blood into the ventricles through the atrioventricular valves (tricuspid on the right, bicuspid/mitral on the left).
- Ventricular systole: The impulse, after a slight delay at the AV node, reaches the ventricles via the bundle of His and Purkinje fibres; both ventricles contract. The atrioventricular valves close (first heart sound 'lubb'). Pressure forces the semilunar valves open: the right ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood into the pulmonary artery (to the lungs) and the left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood into the aorta (to the whole body). …
