Systole/diastole distinguish the contracting vs relaxing phases of the cardiac cycle; plasma/serum distinguish whole fluid blood (with clotting proteins) from the fluid left after clotting (without them).

(a) Systole vs Diastole:

During one cardiac cycle, the heart chambers alternately contract and relax.

  • Systole is the phase of contraction of a heart chamber (atrium or ventricle), during which blood is pumped out of that chamber — e.g., ventricular systole ejects blood into the aorta and pulmonary artery.
  • Diastole is the phase of relaxation of a heart chamber, during which it receives/fills with blood returning from the veins. Systole and diastole of the atria and ventricles are coordinated so that filling and pumping happen in the correct sequence, producing the normal heartbeat ("lub-dup" sounds).

(b) Plasma vs Serum:

  • Plasma is the straw-coloured, fluid, non-cellular matrix of blood (about 55% of blood volume) obtained when blood is centrifuged with an anticoagulant added, so that it does NOT clot. It contains water, proteins (including the clotting factor fibrinogen), salts, and other dissolved substances. …
