(a) Mycorrhiza is the fungus-root association in higher plants; (b) phycoerythrin gives red algae their colour; (c) the platypus is an example of an egg-laying mammal.

(a) Association of roots of higher plants with fungi: This symbiotic association is called mycorrhiza. Certain fungi form an intimate relationship with the roots of many plant species (especially trees), helping the plant absorb water and mineral nutrients (especially phosphorus) more efficiently from the soil, while the fungus obtains food/carbohydrates from the plant in return.

(b) Red pigment of Red Algae: Red algae (Rhodophyceae) owe their characteristic red colour mainly to the pigment r-phycoerythrin, an accessory photosynthetic pigment that, along with chlorophyll a and phycocyanin, allows them to absorb light efficiently even at greater ocean depths.
