Lichens are symbiotic partnerships of an alga and a fungus, and they act as sensitive bio-indicators of air pollution.

Lichens show the following two important features:

  1. Symbiotic (mutualistic) association: A lichen is not a single organism but an intimate association between two components — the algal partner (phycobiont), which is autotrophic and photosynthesises to prepare food, and the fungal partner (mycobiont), which is heterotrophic and provides the alga with shelter, water and minerals absorbed from the substrate. Both partners benefit from this relationship.

  2. Sensitivity to pollution (bio-indicators): Lichens are extremely sensitive to sulphur dioxide and other atmospheric pollutants. Because of this sensitivity, they fail to grow in polluted areas and are widely used by ecologists as pollution indicators of clean, unpolluted air.
