Mycorrhiza is a symbiotic partnership between soil fungi and plant roots, where the fungus helps the plant absorb water and minerals (especially phosphorus) while receiving food/carbohydrates from the plant in return.

In this association, fungal hyphae either form a sheath around the root (ectomycorrhiza) or penetrate root cortical cells (endomycorrhiza), greatly increasing the effective absorptive surface area of the root system:

  • The fungus draws water and minerals — most notably phosphorus — from a much larger volume of soil than the plant's own roots could reach alone, and delivers these to the plant.
