Lichens are symbiotic associations between an alga and a fungus; they are used as pollution indicators and pioneer colonisers, and reproduce vegetatively by fragmentation.

A lichen is not a single organism but a stable symbiotic (mutualistic) association between two very different organisms — an alga (the phycobiont) and a fungus (the mycobiont) — that live together as a single structural and functional unit.

Three distinguishing characters:

  1. Symbiotic composite nature: The alga is photosynthetic and prepares food for the fungus (autotrophic partner); the fungus, in turn, absorbs water and mineral nutrients from the substratum and provides shelter/protection to the alga (heterotrophic partner). Neither component looks or behaves the same when grown alone versus together in the lichen.
  2. Sensitivity to pollution: Lichens are extremely sensitive to sulphur dioxide and other air pollutants and do not grow in polluted areas at all. Their presence or absence is therefore widely used by ecologists as a bioindicator of air quality/pollution levels. …
