Diagram (described): Draw a vertical chain of repeating units. Each unit (a nucleotide) shows a five-membered deoxyribose sugar ring, with a phosphate group attached at its 5' carbon and linked via a phosphodiester bond to the 3' carbon of the sugar in the next nucleotide below it — this alternating sugar-phosphate-sugar-phosphate sequence forms the 'backbone' running down one side. A nitrogenous base (adenine, guanine, cytosine or thymine) is attached to the 1' carbon of each sugar, projecting sideways from the backbone. The chain has a distinct polarity, running from a free 5'-phosphate end to a free 3'-OH end.
