The nucleolus is a dense, non-membrane-bound body within the nucleus that manufactures ribosomal RNA and assembles the subunits of ribosomes.

Structure: The nucleolus is spherical and is not bounded by any membrane of its own — it lies within the nucleoplasm, closely associated with a particular part of a specific chromosome called the nucleolar organiser region (NOR). A cell may have one or more nucleoli, and their size and number can vary depending on the cell's protein-synthesis activity.

Function: The nucleolus is the site of:

  • Synthesis of ribosomal RNA (rRNA).
  • Processing and assembly of rRNA with proteins to form the small and large ribosomal subunits, which are then exported to the cytoplasm to form functional ribosomes.

Because of this role, cells that are very active in protein synthesis (such as secretory cells) tend to have prominent, larger nucleoli.
