The nucleolus is where rRNA is actively transcribed and pre-ribosomal subunits are assembled.

Within the eukaryotic nucleus, apart from chromatin and the nucleoplasm, there is usually one or more spherical, densely-stained structures called nucleoli. Nucleoli are not bound by any membrane and are directly connected to specific chromosomal regions bearing the rRNA genes (nucleolar organiser regions). The nucleolus is the principal site of synthesis of ribosomal RNA and of the assembly of ribosomal subunits, which are then exported to the cytoplasm to form functional ribosomes.
