The nucleus consists of a double-membraned, pore-studded envelope enclosing nucleoplasm, chromatin and one or more nucleoli.

The nucleus is the largest membrane-bound organelle in a eukaryotic cell and is the control centre of the cell. Its structure includes:

  • Nuclear envelope — a double membrane (outer and inner) enclosing the nucleus; the outer membrane is often continuous with the endoplasmic reticulum and may bear ribosomes. The space between the two membranes is the perinuclear space.
  • Nuclear pores — numerous openings in the envelope, formed where the outer and inner membranes fuse, that regulate the movement of RNA and proteins between the nucleus and cytoplasm.
  • Nucleoplasm — the semi-fluid matrix inside the nucleus, containing the chromatin and nucleolus.
  • Chromatin — a network of thread-like material made of DNA and histone proteins; it condenses into distinct, visible chromosomes during cell division. …
