The 12 pairs of human ribs are grouped by how (or whether) their costal cartilage reaches the sternum: true ribs attach directly, the middle group attaches only indirectly, and floating ribs do not attach at all.

The rib cage (thoracic cage) in humans consists of 12 pairs of ribs, each articulating dorsally with a thoracic vertebra. Ventrally, ribs are classified by their relationship to the sternum:

The 8th-10th rib pairs (the third classical category, printed in this paper as 'Tricephalic ribs' — a non-standard term that could not be independently confirmed against the usual anatomy vocabulary) do not reach the sternum directly. Instead, their costal cartilages fuse with the cartilage of the rib immediately above, forming a costal margin that indirectly joins the sternum. In standard nomenclature these are called false ribs (or vertebrochondral ribs).
  2. True ribs are the 1st-7th pairs. Each has its own costal cartilage that attaches directly and individually to the sternum, making them the most firmly anchored ribs of the cage. …
