A bicephalic rib has two heads for articulation with the vertebrae; the rib cage is formed of 12 pairs of ribs, the thoracic vertebrae and the sternum.

  1. A rib is a thin, flat bone connected dorsally to the vertebral column and ventrally to the sternum. It is called bicephalic ('two-headed') because its dorsal end bears two articular surfaces (heads) - one articulates with the body of the thoracic vertebra and the other with its transverse process.
