The rib cage is the thoracic bony basket protecting the heart/lungs (sternum + 12 pairs of ribs + thoracic vertebrae); osteoporosis is an age-related disease that reduces bone density and mass, making bones fragile.

Rib cage (thoracic cage):

  • Formed by the sternum (breast bone) at the front, 12 pairs of ribs curving around the sides, and the 12 thoracic vertebrae at the back.
  • Ribs are classified as: true ribs (1st-7th pair, directly joined to the sternum by their own costal cartilage), false ribs (8th-10th pair, joined to the sternum indirectly via the cartilage of the 7th rib), and floating ribs (11th-12th pair, not connected to the sternum at all).
