According to molecular orbital theory, when two atomic orbitals combine (by linear combination of atomic orbitals, LCAO), they can combine in two ways — additively or subtractively — producing two molecular orbitals for every two atomic orbitals combined.
Bonding molecular orbital:
- Formed by the addition (constructive/in-phase overlap) of the wave functions of the combining atomic orbitals.
- Has lower energy and greater stability than the atomic orbitals from which it is formed.
- Electron probability density is high in the region between the two nuclei, which holds the nuclei together (shields the mutual repulsion of the nuclei) and stabilizes the molecule.
- Denoted with plain symbols: sigma, pi (e.g. sigma1s, pi2p).
Antibonding molecular orbital:
- Formed by the subtraction (destructive/out-of-phase overlap) of the wave functions of the combining atomic orbitals.
- Has higher energy and lower stability than the atomic orbitals from which it is formed. …
