The two standard ways to purify an organic liquid both rely on boiling-point differences: simple distillation removes non-volatile impurities, and fractional distillation splits apart liquids with similar boiling points.

1. Simple distillation.

The impure liquid is heated in a distillation flask; the liquid vaporises while non-volatile impurities (dissolved solids, or a liquid of very different/much higher boiling point) remain behind. The vapour is then cooled and condensed in a condenser to collect the pure liquid as distillate. This method works well when the liquid to be purified is reasonably volatile, stable at its boiling point, and its impurities are either non-volatile or boil at a temperature far removed from the liquid's own boiling point (a difference of at least ~25°C or more is generally needed for a clean separation).
