- Crystallisation: this technique is used to purify solids, based on the principle that the solubility of a substance in a given solvent increases with temperature, and different substances (the desired compound and its impurities) have different solubilities. The impure solid is dissolved in a minimum quantity of hot solvent to make a saturated solution, which is then filtered hot (to remove insoluble impurities) and allowed to cool slowly. On cooling, the desired substance, being less soluble at lower temperature, crystallizes out first in pure form, while soluble impurities remain behind in the mother liquor (since they are present in too small an amount to reach their own saturation point). Example: purification of impure alum (or impure copper sulfate) by recrystallizing it from hot water.
- Distillation: this technique is used to separate a volatile liquid from non-volatile dissolved substances, or to separate two (or more) miscible liquids that have a sufficiently large difference in boiling points. The liquid mixture is heated in a distillation flask; the more volatile component/liquid vaporizes first at its boiling point, and the vapours are led through a condenser, where they cool and condense back into a liquid, which is collected separately as the distillate, leaving the higher-boiling/non-volatile component behind in the flask. Example: separation of water from a salt solution (simple distillation), or separation of acetone (b.p. 56 degrees C) from water (b.p. 100 degrees C). …
